When giving your dog CBD, it’s important to carefully build up to the dose that’s just right for him. But what if the amount of CBD a product contains varies from batch to batch, and what if the product you’re giving your dog doesn’t contain nearly the amount of CBD identified on the label?
Those scenarios often occur, and they make it impossible to provide your dog with a consistent, appropriate dose of CBD. A new report reveals just how often CBD products for pets are labeled incorrectly, and the results are eye-opening.
Most CBD Pet Products Are Inaccurately Labeled
Leafreport, an online resource whose stated mission is to bring transparency to the CBD industry, has just released the findings from its pet CBD report.
Leafreport sent 55 pet CBD products for independent testing for cannabinoid content.
The results of the study revealed that 56% of the pet products tested did not contain the amount of CBD listed on their labels. While the industry standard accepts up to a 10% variance in a product’s CBD content, 24 of the 55 products tested did not meet the standard.
Out of the 24 products whose label claims did not match CBD test results, 58% contained more CBD than indicated. Pet edibles and topicals tended to be haved a greater variance than products like oils and tinctures.
While 22 of the products were advertised as containing full-spectrum CBD, testing revealed that none of these products contained THC. A full-spectrum product should contain some THC, but less than 0.3%.It’s also concerning to see just how widely CBD content varied. Some products contained up to 98% less CBD than their labels indicated, meaning consumers are getting extremely poor value for your money. Other products contained up to 68% more CBD than listed on their labels, making it difficult to tell just how much CBD is being given.
Why Third-Party Testing Matters
When buying CBD products for your dog, it’s essential to buy a product that is third-party tested. Third-party testing refers to the process where a manufacturer sends its products to an independent lab. The lab then tests the product contents and confirms that they meet label claims. Third-party testing not only measures the amount of CBD in a product, but can also check the product for contaminants.
This type of testing helps a manufacturer to continuously evaluate the safety and content of its products. Independent testing ensures that your dog is getting a consistent dose (when label directions are followed), and confirms that you’re getting the CBD content you paid for.
