CBD for Seasonal Allergies: Can It Help?

 CBD for allergies

If lately, your days have been spent rummaging through wadded Kleenex, wiping away watery eyes and doing your best to control your stuffy, runny nose, you’re not alone. Nearly one in three people in the United States experience some form of seasonal allergies.

Many people reach toward antihistamines and cough medications to relieve congestion, but allergy medication may not be the only option. Ongoing research is exploring the impact of CBD for allergies, and some believe that CBD may help to ease inflammation and support immune health.

But how viable is it? We’re diving into everything you need to know.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies?

To understand potential treatments for allergy relief, you must first understand the mechanisms that influence seasonal allergies. Seasonal allergies typically emerge during the spring and summer months in the United States — namely, February through June. Although, some allergens also emerge during the fall.

During the warmer months, pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths travel to trees, flowers and grass to boost plant growth — and, subsequently, in-air pollen counts. As a result, people whose immune systems react negatively to allergens like tree pollen, grass, mold and ragweed, can develop unwanted symptoms that can make it difficult to function day to day. If breathed in, the allergen can become trapped in the mucus membranes of the nasal passages, causing inflammation and irritation.

When coming in contact with an allergen, the body’s immune system identifies the substance as a dangerous intruder. To combat the enemy, the immune system releases several chemicals: histamines, leukotrienes and prostaglandins, which trigger allergy symptoms like:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Itchy eyes, nose, mouth or throat

CBD and The Immune System

When speaking about seasonal allergies, the immune system plays a key role in the body’s allergic response. Fortunately, CBD — short for cannabidiol — may help to maintain a balance within the immune system, offering a potential natural solution to said allergic reactions.

The cannabinoid, which comes from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the hemp plant, interacts with another system within the body, called the endocannabinoid system. Whether ingested, inhaled or applied topically, CBD can interact with cannabinoid receptors, which are found throughout the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (immune cells).

For the purpose of this article, we’ll be speaking to the latter receptor — CB2, which helps to regulate immune function and inflammation.

But let’s back up a bit — what exactly are cannabinoid receptors?

Within the endocannabinoid system exist endocannabinoids, naturally occurring molecules that play a role in a vast cell-signaling system that helps to maintain homeostasis throughout the body. To achieve this, the receptors bind to these endocannabinoids to modulate various physiological processes.

When CBD, a cannabinoid itself, enters the body, it can mimic these endocannabinoids and interact with the receptors to produce similar results.

Okay, got it? Now back to CB2.

There is growing evidence to support the theory that CB2 may have anti-inflammatory effects, specifically when activated by cannabinoids like CBD.

Since CB2 receptors are expressed in immune cells, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, these receptors can influence the activity of immune cells, modulating the release of cytokines and other signaling molecules involved in the inflammatory response.

All that said, CB2 receptors may play a role in inhibiting certain inflammatory pathways. By doing so, they could potentially reduce the severity of allergic reactions and associated symptoms. When activated, they may also help to protect tissues within the nasal pathways to reduce discomfort and itchiness.

What Type of CBD May Work Best For Seasonal Allergies?

There are various types and forms of CBD on the market today, thanks to its federal legalization in 2018. First, let’s begin by exploring the three classes of CBD.

Full Spectrum CBD

There are various compounds found in the hemp plant itself. They include:

  • Flavonoids – These compounds are found in various plant tissues and are believed to have numerous medicinal benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties. When an allergen enters your body, flavonoids can help to dismiss the triggered inflammatory response to ease or mitigate symptoms of said allergic reaction.
  • Terpenes – Also found in plant materials, these compounds are aromatic, producing the pungent scent that’s most commonly associated with cannabis plants. They can help regulate mood and increase the effects of CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cannabinoids – In addition to CBD, broad spectrum products contain numerous other cannabinoids found within the hemp plant, including CBN, CBG and trace amounts of THC, among others. Like CBD, these cannabinoids may interact with the CB2 receptors to reduce inflammation triggered by allergens.

Together, these components create what’s known as the “entourage effect,” — a theory that suggests that the combination of each of these elements enhances the effects of CBD in the body.

Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad spectrum contains all of the same elements as full spectrum CBD — flavonoids, terpenes and cannabinoids — except for THC. That said, its elements may still create an “entourage effect” that helps to ease inflammation in the body caused by seasonal allergies.

Isolate CBD

Isolate CBD is a pure form of CBD, meaning it does not contain flavonoids, terpenes or other cannabinoids. Accordingly, it does not produce an “entourage effect,” although it can still influence the endocannabinoid system to help modulate the immune response when you come in contact with an allergen.

Fortunately, all classes of CBD are available on the market in multiple forms to help you personalize how you use CBD. These types of CBD include:

  • CBD oils – CBD oils, also known as tinctures, are liquid extracts of cannabidiol. They are usually taken sublingually (under the tongue) for rapid absorption. Sublingual administration allows for quicker absorption into the bloodstream, and it can help to modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.
  • CBD topicalsCBD topicals include creams, balms, salves and lotions infused with CBD. They’re applied directly to the skin for localized relief and may help to alleviate skin-related symptoms associated with seasonal allergies, such as itchiness or redness.
  • CBD chewable tablets – CBD chewable tablets are convenient, pre-dosed options for oral consumption. They can offer a systematic approach similar to CBD oils. However, the onset of effects may be slightly delayed compared to sublingual administration.
  • CBD edibles – CBD gummies, beverages and sweets are edible products infused with CBD, providing a tasty and discreet way to consume cannabidiol. Like chewable tablets, CBD edibles can provide systemic effects, but the time it takes for effects to manifest may be influenced by the digestive process. • CBD vape products – CBD vape products, such as pens, cartridges and e-liquids, involve inhaling vaporized CBD. Vaping provides a rapid onset of effects, potentially offering quick relief. However, its suitability for individuals with respiratory concerns should be considered.

How To Choose a Safe Form of CBD

The type and form of CBD for allergies you choose will depend on your specific symptoms and preferences. That said, it’s important to choose a CBD product that’s safe, reliable and meets high-quality standards. Here are essential considerations for selecting a safe form of CBD:

  • Third-party testing – Opt for CBD products that undergo third-party testing. This ensures an independent assessment of the product's cannabinoid content, including CBD and THC levels, as well as the absence of contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents.
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA)– Look for a Certificate of Analysis, a document provided by the third-party testing lab. This certificate verifies the authenticity of the product's ingredients and confirms that it meets safety and quality standards.
  • Hemp source– Choose CBD products derived from organically grown hemp. Hemp plants are bioaccumulators, meaning they absorb substances from their environment. Organically grown hemp is less likely to contain harmful pesticides or herbicides.
  • Extraction method– Consider the extraction method used to obtain CBD from the hemp plant. CO2 extraction is widely regarded as a safe and efficient method that preserves the integrity of the cannabinoids and eliminates the need for potentially harmful solvents.
  • Product transparency– Choose products from reputable companies that prioritize transparency. Look for clear labeling, including the CBD concentration per serving, and detailed information about the product's ingredients and sourcing.
  • Customer reviews and ratings– Research customer reviews and ratings for the specific CBD product or brand you’re considering. Positive experiences from other users can provide insights into the product's effectiveness and safety.
  • Dosages – Begin with a low dosage and gradually increase if needed. This approach allows you to assess how your body responds to CBD and minimizes the risk of potential side effects. • Healthcare professional insights– Before incorporating CBD into your wellness routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or take medications, consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual health profile.
